1. General Terms and Conditions

1.1 Lessee/Driver Age and Driving Licence

  • a. For all standard vehicles, the Lessee and all authorised additional drivers must be at least 20 years old and no older than 80 years old. They must present a full and valid driving licence for the vehicle category rented.
  • b.For the following categories, the young driver fee applies for the Lessee and all authorised additional drivers aged 20–25 years: F***, L***, P***, V**, ***I, ***E, ***H, and ***C.
  • c. The driving licence must have been held for at least one year and must not contain major endorsements or penalty points.
  • d.If the national driving licence is not written in the Roman (Latin) alphabet, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required together with the original domestic licence. Where the licence-issuing country does not issue IDPs — for example mainland China — a certified (notarised) translation presented together with the original licence is accepted instead.
  • e.The physical licence must be presented at collection. Digital licences, screenshots and scans are not accepted, with one exception: an official Icelandic digital driving licence that is legally valid in Iceland and can be verified live through Ísland.is.
  • f. A driving licence for a passenger vehicle carrying more than eight passengers, in addition to the driver, must include category D1 or D, depending on the vehicle.
  • g. The Lessor reserves the right to refuse the rental if the requirements of clause 1.1 are not met, and to refuse any additional driver who does not meet them. Where the rental is refused for this reason, the booking is treated as a no-show and clause 1.5 determines any refund.

1.2 Lessee/Driver Identification

1.2.1 The Lessee and/or driver must present a valid passport or a valid Schengen, EU, EEA, UK, USA or Canada national identity card at collection. The Lessor may require the identification details to match the booking and the payment-card holder's details.

1.3 Payment Methods and Currency

1.3.1 Prepaid bookings are charged to the cardholder's account when the vehicle is reserved. Pay-later bookings are charged when the vehicle is collected or within a few days after the scheduled collection day, for example in the event of a no-show. The following international credit cards are accepted: American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Discover, Diners. A transaction fee of 3.5% applies to American Express, Discover and Diners payments. The following currencies may be accepted in cash on arrival: USD, EUR, GBP, and ISK. If payment is made in another currency, exchange-rate and bank or payment-processor fees may apply.

1.3.2 All prices and fees under these Terms are stated in EUR and charged in ISK or EUR and include VAT unless stated otherwise.

1.4 Card Requirement and Pre-authorisation (No Deposit)

  • a. A valid credit card or debit card in the Lessee's name is required.
  • b.The Lessor may verify the card by a small amount check or a pre-authorisation. This is not a deposit and is released per the card issuer's procedures.
  • c.The card on file may be charged for all amounts owed under the Rental Agreement/Lease — including damage not covered by waivers, Excess Amounts, penalties, administration fees, fines, tolls, missing fuel, cleaning, and towing — during the rental and for a reasonable period after it ends, including costs that become known later.
  • d.Only physical cards showing the card number, expiry date, and the Lessee's name are accepted. The card must remain valid for 90 days after the Rental Period, and a replacement must be provided on request. Prepaid, purchasing, anonymous, and virtual cards are not accepted.
  • e. If no qualifying card is presented or verification fails, the Lessor may refuse to release the vehicle; the booking is then a no-show under clause 1.5.1.

1.5 Cancellation and Amendment Policy

1.5.1 Cancellation.Cancellation more than 48 hours before the scheduled collection time: full refund of the prepaid amount. Cancellation less than 48 hours before collection, or a no-show (clause 2.1.1) including failure to present the documents or card required by clauses 1.1–1.4: no refund.

1.5.2 Amendments.Amendments are subject to availability and, within 48 hours of collection, to the Lessor's consent. Each amendment costs EUR 30 (clause 3.3) plus repricing at the Lessor's rates in force on the amendment date: a higher price is payable, a lower one is not refunded. An amendment never restarts the cancellation window — refund rights stay measured from the original scheduled collection time, and non-refundable amounts stay non-refundable.

1.5.3 Non-refundable rates. A rate marked non-refundable at booking is charged in full and not refunded. A car-rental booking for a specific period carries no 14-day withdrawal right (Act No. 16/2016, Article 18).

1.6 Tax

1.6.1 The local value-added tax (VAT) rate is 24%. All fees under these Terms and Conditions include VAT unless expressly stated otherwise. Statutory government levies that fall outside the scope of VAT, such as the road-use charge in clause 3.6, are itemised separately without VAT.

1.7 Rental Period

  • a. All rentals are charged in 24-hour rental days. A full additional rental day is charged for any period extending more than one hour beyond a complete 24-hour rental day.
  • b. The Rental Period begins when the Rental Agreement/Lease has been signed and the Lessor has delivered the vehicle to the Lessee.
  • c. The Rental Period ends when the vehicle has been returned to the Lessor at the agreed location and time, including through an authorised key-drop system where applicable. A later inspection does not affect the return time used to calculate the Rental Period unless the return is incomplete, for example because keys or documents are missing, or the return time is disputed.
  • d. The Total Rental Price is charged from the scheduled collection time, regardless of whether the Lessee collects the vehicle at that time, until the scheduled return time or the time the vehicle is returned to the Lessor, whichever is later. Voluntary early return or non-use does not reduce the Total Rental Price.

1.8 Mileage

1.8.1 Where mileage is limited, each excess kilometre is charged at EUR 0.35. The included kilometres are stated in the Rental Agreement/Lease.

1.9 Cross-Border Travel and Ferries

1.9.1 The rental vehicle may not be taken outside Iceland without the Lessor's prior written consent. Travel on domestic ferries is permitted at the Lessee's responsibility. No insurance or waiver included in the Rental Agreement/Lease covers vehicle damage or loss during unauthorised travel outside Iceland, ferry transport, or overseas transport.

1.10 Breakdown Assistance

1.10.1 24/7 breakdown assistance is available by calling +354 779 9499. The cost of assistance depends on the Lessee's location, the severity of the problem, and other relevant factors. The Lessee will not be charged for assistance required because of a breakdown caused by normal wear and tear. If assistance is required because of the Lessee's use, negligence, breach of these Terms and Conditions, or an event not covered by insurance or waivers, the Lessee must pay the applicable costs in accordance with the Lessor's Price List and clause 3.5.7. The Lessee must contact the Lessor before arranging any third-party assistance or repair; unauthorised repairs are not reimbursed (clause 4.10).

2. Rental Vehicles

2.1 Collection and Return

2.1.1 Collection. The vehicle must be collected within two hours after the scheduled collection time. If the Lessee does not collect the vehicle within that period, the reservation may be treated as a no-show and cancelled. Any refund entitlement will be determined in accordance with clause 1.5.

2.1.2 Return.The vehicle must be returned to the Lessor's rental location at the end of the Rental Period, as described in clause 1.7. Return to a location not approved in advance by the Lessor is subject to the towing fee in clause 3.5.7. The vehicle must be returned clean inside and sufficiently clean outside to allow an effective inspection under clause 2.2. A cleaning fee may apply under clause 3.5.6.

2.2 Vehicle Inspection

2.2.1 Before the Rental.Before each rental, the Lessee must sign the Vehicle Condition Report provided by the Lessor. If the Lessee identifies damage that is not recorded in the report when taking possession of the vehicle, the Lessee must submit photographs and/or written details through the Lessor's automated reporting system before leaving the collection location. If the Lessee reports no unrecorded damage, the Lessee is deemed to have accepted the report as correct.

2.2.2 After Return. After the vehicle is returned in accordance with clause 2.1.2, the Lessor will inspect it as soon as reasonably possible.

2.2.2.1 Vehicle Condition Form (Confirmation Receipt).The vehicle will be inspected on return, and the Lessee will receive a confirmation receipt for the Vehicle Condition Report. The inspection can take place only during the Opening Hours published on the website and stated in the Rental Agreement/Lease, and only when the vehicle is returned to the Lessor's office in Keflavík. A vehicle returned outside Opening Hours may be inspected on the next business day, and the receipt will be issued after the inspection is completed. The vehicle remains at the Lessee's risk and responsibility until the inspection can take place.

2.2.2.2 Damage Settlement.If the inspection identifies damage that was not recorded in the Vehicle Condition Report and was not reported by the Lessee when taking possession of the vehicle under clause 2.2.1, the Lessor will photograph and identify the damage and price it in accordance with the Damage Price List published on the Lessor's website and stated in the Damage Liability Form. The Lessee must sign the Damage Liability Form and, by signing it, acknowledges the obligation to pay the stated cost, subject to applicable law. The absence of the Lessee's signature does not affect the Lessee's liability for damage that is documented in accordance with this clause, and the Lessor may charge the documented cost under clause 1.4.

If the Lessee does not accept the damage charge, the Lessee may, within 14 days of the damage notification, request an assessment from an independent motor-vehicle repair shop using the Cabas claims system. The outcome is binding on both parties, and the Lessee must pay the damage cost it determines. The report is sent to the email address stated in the Rental Agreement/Lease.

2.3 Smoking

2.3.1 Smoking and vaping are not permitted in the rental vehicle.

2.4 Winter Tyres

2.4.1 All rental vehicles are equipped with winter tyres from 1 November to 14 April.

2.5 Vehicle Types

2.5.1 Reserved Vehicle Type Not Available. The Lessee may reserve a particular vehicle type. If the reserved vehicle type is unavailable, the Lessor may substitute a similar vehicle in the same ACRISS category or a vehicle in a higher category without changing the rental rate. A specific make or model is not guaranteed unless expressly agreed in writing.

2.5.2 Driving on F Roads, Kjölur (Road 35), and Kaldidalur (Road 550). Passenger vehicles and all 2WD vehicles may not be driven on F roads, Kjölur (road 35 from road 37 to road 732), Kaldidalur (road 550), Öxi (road 939), road 586, or road 864.

4WD SUVs may be driven on Kjölur (road 35), Kaldidalur (road 550), and F roads, except F26, F66, F88, F206, F207, F208 other than the section from road 26 to F224, F210, F223, F225, F228, F229, F232, F233, F235, F249, F261, F333, F337, F338, F578, F734, F752, F756, F821, F839, F881, F899, F902, F903, F905, F909, F910, F946, and F980.

Vehicles may not be driven on unregistered roads or paths, closed roads, or roads on which the vehicle may suffer damage that is not covered by the Lessor's insurance. The Lessee is responsible for checking road classifications and closures with the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration at road.is.

2.5.3 Off-Road Driving. Off-road driving is illegal for all vehicle groups. If the restrictions in clauses 2.5.2 and 2.5.3 are breached, all insurance and waivers for the rental vehicle will be deemed null and void to the extent permitted by applicable law. The Lessee will be fully responsible for any resulting damage and all related consequences, including the cost of repairing the vehicle. The Lessee may also be charged the fees stated in clauses 3.5.1 and 3.5.2.

4. Obligations of the Lessee

4.1 The Lessee agrees to the provisions of the Rental Agreement/Lease and confirms receipt of a copy.

4.2 The Lessee must return the vehicle:

  • a. with all accessories, including tyres, tools, and extras, in the condition in which they were received;
  • b. on the date and at the time stated in the Rental Agreement/Lease, unless otherwise agreed;
  • c. to the agreed Lessor's premises, unless otherwise agreed;
  • d. with the fuel tank at the same level as at collection; and
  • e. in a clean condition.

4.3 If the Lessee does not return the vehicle at the agreed time or does not declare an intention to extend the Rental Period and receive the Lessor's confirmation, the Lessor and/or the police may repossess the vehicle without further notice at the Lessee's cost, and the Lessor may locate the vehicle using the devices described in clause 8. An extension is subject to the Lessor's consent. If the vehicle is returned more than one hour after the Rental Period ends, the Lessor may charge an additional 24-hour rental day. Each further commenced 24-hour period is charged as an additional rental day at the Lessor's then-current Price List daily rate, together with the Lessor's documented costs of recovery. Continued use of the vehicle after the Rental Period without the Lessor's consent constitutes unauthorised use.

4.4 The Lessee is responsible for planning the journey carefully and checking road conditions, weather forecasts, road closures, and general warnings.

4.5 The vehicle must be handled and driven carefully and locked when unattended, with the keys kept out of the vehicle. Only drivers named in the Rental Agreement/Lease are authorised to drive it; the Lessee remains responsible for anyone the Lessee gives the vehicle, a key, or access to. The Lessee and each authorised driver are jointly and severally liable for the obligations arising from use of the vehicle. The Lessee is liable for damage to the vehicle and/or injury to passengers for which no compensation is payable under the rental insurance or third-party liability insurance where the damage or injury results from:

  • a. off-road driving or driving on an unauthorised road;
  • b. driving in or across a river or any other watercourse;
  • c. an intentional act or gross negligence;
  • d. the driver's use of intoxicants;
  • e. use of the vehicle in breach of Icelandic law and/or the Rental Agreement/Lease; or
  • f. any use of the vehicle that a prudent driver would avoid.

4.6 In the event of a collision or accident, the Lessee must immediately notify the appropriate police authority and the Lessor and must not leave the scene before the police arrive. The Lessee must complete an accident statement with the other driver, obtain both parties' signatures, keep one copy, and send the statement to the Lessor immediately after the accident. Theft, vandalism, and damage involving animals must be reported to the police and to the Lessor without delay. Failure to comply with this clause may void the applicable waivers to the extent permitted by law.

4.7 The number of kilometres driven during the Rental Period is determined by the vehicle's standard odometer. The Lessee must notify the Lessor as soon as possible if the odometer is defective or stops working. The Lessee must not interfere with the odometer or any tracking, safety, or diagnostic device fitted to the vehicle; interference is a material breach and the Lessee bears all resulting costs.

4.8 The Lessor is not responsible for the loss of or damage to property that the Lessee or another person leaves in or on the vehicle or transports in the vehicle.

4.9 The Lessee agrees to pay the Lessor, on request:

  • a. the vehicle rental price and the cost of any requested or mandatory extra services; and
  • b.all expenses incurred by the Lessor in returning the vehicle to the Lessor's premises, regardless of the vehicle's condition, the road conditions, or the weather.

4.10 The Lessee may not arrange repairs, alter the vehicle or its accessories, or use the vehicle as security without the Lessor's prior written consent.

4.11 The Lessee is responsible for all parking charges, entrance fees, road tolls, unpaid charges related to use of the vehicle, and fines for traffic offences arising during the Rental Period, including those received after the rental ends, together with the processing fee in clause 3.5.4.

4.12 The Lessee may not use the vehicle to transport passengers for payment, lend it to another person, or sublet it without the Lessor's prior consent, and may not use it for racing, speed testing, driver training, towing or pushing another vehicle, or carrying hazardous goods beyond ordinary lawful personal-use quantities.

4.13 The Lessee must use the correct fuel type stated in the Rental Agreement/Lease and marked on or inside the vehicle. Damage caused by incorrect fuel is not covered by any waiver and is charged at the documented cost. Animals may not be carried without the Lessor's prior written consent; additional cleaning attributable to an animal is charged under clause 3.5.6 or at the documented cost. Loads may be carried on the roof only with a rack approved by the Lessor, and the Lessee must observe the vehicle's height and clearance.

4.14 The Lessee may not set off any claim against the Lessor's rental charges unless the claim has been acknowledged by the Lessor in writing or established by a final judgment.

5. Obligations of the Lessor

5.1 The Lessor will provide the vehicle at the agreed time and ensure that it meets the applicable requirements.

5.2 If the vehicle malfunctions, the Lessor will provide a comparable vehicle as soon as possible in accordance with clause 1.10. If the malfunction is minor, the Lessor may repair the vehicle with the Lessee's prior consent.

5.3 The Lessor will inform the Lessee of the content of the Rental Agreement/Lease, particularly the obligations accepted by the Lessee on signing it.

5.4 The Lessor will inform a foreign Lessee about Icelandic traffic regulations, traffic signs, and the prohibition against off-road driving. The Lessor will specifically draw attention to the dangers caused by animals on roads.

5.5 Any restriction on use of the vehicle because of its equipment and/or road conditions must be stated in writing when the Rental Agreement/Lease is signed or communicated to the Lessee in writing by email during the rental.

5.6 The Lessor will maintain valid liability insurance for its business operations and rental vehicles.

6. Insurance

6.1 The rental price includes mandatory vehicle insurance: Third-Party Liability Insurance (TPL), including personal accident insurance for the driver and owner, as described in clause 6.3.1.

6.2 The Lessee may purchase the additional insurance and waivers described in clause 6.4.

6.3 Mandatory Insurance

6.3.1 Third-Party Liability Insurance (TPL):When renting one of the Lessor's vehicles, the Lessee is covered by the mandatory TPL required by Icelandic law, consisting of:

  • 6.3.1.1 Statutory vehicle liability insurance, which compensates a third party for damage caused by the rental vehicle.
  • 6.3.1.2 Statutory personal accident insurance for the driver and owner, which compensates the driver for bodily injury sustained while operating the rental vehicle.

Third-party liability insurance is limited to the amount required by Icelandic law at any given time. Further details are available in the Mandatory Vehicle Insurance Terms issued by the Lessor's insurer, Sjóvá-Almennar tryggingar hf.: sjova.is/en/insurance/terms-and-information-documents

6.4 Additional Insurance and Waivers

6.4.1 Collision Damage Waiver (CDW):CDW is mandatory unless the Lessee provides written proof from an insurance company specifically confirming that collision coverage is valid in Iceland for the full Rental Period and covers the vehicle up to its market value, and the Lessor accepts that proof in writing. Use of personal third-party insurance is entirely at the Lessee's responsibility. If CDW is declined and the third-party cover is invalid, the Lessee is fully liable for the value of the vehicle and extras. The Excess Amount applies per incident. Where damage clearly arose from separate incidents, a separate Excess Amount applies to each incident; damage that cannot reasonably be attributed to a single event, for example unrelated impact damage on different sides of the vehicle, is treated as separate incidents.

6.4.1.1 CDW reduces the Lessee's financial responsibility for covered collision damage to the applicable Excess Amount per incident. The CDW Excess Amount is EUR 3,000 for all vehicle groups.

6.4.1.2 CDW covers collision-type damage. It does not cover:

  • a. intentional damage, vandalism, or damage caused by the driver's gross negligence;
  • b. damage caused while the driver is under the influence of alcohol, stimulants, sedatives, or otherwise incapable of driving safely;
  • c. damage caused by racing, or test driving;
  • d. damage caused by war, revolution, civil unrest, or riots;
  • e. damage caused by or involving animals;
  • f. all interior damage;
  • g. damage affecting only wheels, tyres, suspension, batteries, glass, roof or radios, or the theft of vehicle parts and resulting damage;
  • h. undercarriage damage; damage to the drivetrain or other parts attached to the chassis caused by rough roads; chassis damage caused by scraping on road-grader ridges or stones; or damage caused when stones strike the underside, engine, or other mechanical parts;
  • i. damage caused by driving where the vehicle is not permitted, including paths, tracks, snowbanks, ice, unbridged rivers or streams, beaches, places accessible only at low tide, or other trackless areas;
  • j. damage caused by windblown sand, gravel, ash, pumice, or other earth material;
  • k. damage caused during overseas transport;
  • l. damage occurring while the vehicle is driven by an unauthorised or unlicensed driver;
  • m. damage to the clutch and/or transmission, and damage caused by incorrect fuel;
  • n. damage where the type of collision does not explain the cause of the damage; or
  • o. damage caused by a door being blown open by the wind.

6.4.2 Theft Waiver (TW): included for all vehicle groups, provided the vehicle was locked, the keys are returned to the Lessor, and the theft was reported to the police and the Lessor without delay.

6.4.3 Sand and Ash Protection (SAAP):SAAP reduces the Lessee's financial responsibility for damage caused by erosion, sandstorms, or ash to an Excess Amount of zero per incident for all vehicle groups. If a storm is forecast, the Lessee is responsible for avoiding the danger area for this coverage to remain valid.

6.4.4 Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW):SCDW reduces the Lessee's financial responsibility for covered collision damage to an Excess Amount of EUR 1,000 per incident for all vehicle groups. The exclusions in clause 6.4.1.2 also apply to SCDW.

6.4.5 Gravel Protection (GP):GP covers damage caused by gravel thrown by another vehicle against the front windshield, headlights and foglights and it reduces the Lessee's liability to zero.

6.4.6 Tire Protection (TP): TP covers the cost of repairing or replacing tyres when only the tyre is damaged. It does not cover transport to a tyre shop, roadside assistance, emergency fees, or damage to the wheel rim.

6.4.7 Zero Waiver (ZW):ZW is only available to purchase if Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is selected or included in the reservation and reduces the Lessee's financial responsibility for CDW/SCDW to an Excess Amount of zero per incident for all vehicle groups. This includes damages covered by GP, TP, and SAAP. The exclusions in clause 6.4.1.2 also apply to ZW.

6.4.8 Roadside Protection (RAP):RAP reduces the Lessee's financial responsibility per incident for assistance and recovery fees resulting from incidents such as collisions, flat batteries, tyre punctures, or lock-outs. RAP does not cover the cost of replacement keys, replacement tyres, incorrect fuel, running out of fuel or charge, or other self-inflicted incidents. The benefits of RAP are subject to the Lessee's full compliance with the terms and conditions.

6.4.9 Insurance/Waiver Packages: The Lessee may select a package containing the insurance and waivers described above. Every package remains subject to the terms in clause 6.4.

6.4.10 A waiver applies only during the agreed Rental Period, for drivers named in the Rental Agreement/Lease, after its price has been paid, and during authorised use of the vehicle. Waivers may be added or upgraded only before an incident occurs, never after an incident is already known.

7. General Provisions

7.1 The Rental Agreement/Lease must be kept in the vehicle throughout the Rental Period.

7.2 Any addition or amendment to the terms and provisions of the Rental Agreement/Lease must be made in writing.

7.3 Icelandic law applies to agreements made under these Terms and Conditions, including claims for compensation, the basis and calculation of compensation, and claims for damages arising outside the agreement. Legal disputes concerning the Rental Agreement/Lease will be heard before the court having jurisdiction at the Lessor's legal venue.

7.4 Disputes between the parties to the Rental Agreement/Lease may be submitted to the relevant Complaints Board.

7.5 Overdue amounts bear statutory default interest under Act No. 38/2001 from the due date. After any required collection warning, the Lessor may recover collection costs under Act No. 95/2008 or use an authorised collection provider. A card chargeback does not by itself extinguish an otherwise valid debt.

7.6 The Lessor may assign the Rental Agreement/Lease and these Terms to an affiliated company or a successor to its business that assumes the Lessor's obligations.

7.7 If a provision of these Terms is found invalid or unenforceable, it applies to the greatest extent permitted by law, and the remaining provisions remain in full force.

8. GPS Tracking Devices

8.1 The Lessor may use a telematics service provider to collect the following data from the rental vehicle: position, speed, acceleration, impact data including location, g-force, and direction of impact, vehicle data, and the identifier of the device fitted to the vehicle. The data may be used to detect and prevent loss or theft of company vehicles, manage insurance claims, identify unauthorized vehicle movement or use, monitor and improve customer driving behaviour, manage vehicle inventory, and service vehicles. A vehicle fitted with a tracking device will display a sticker stating that it is tracked. Further information about the processing of personal data is available in the Lessor's Privacy Policy. Disabling, removing, or interfering with a tracking device is a material breach of the Rental Agreement/Lease, and the Lessee bears all resulting costs.

9. Limitation of Responsibility

9.1 The Lessor will make all reasonable efforts to keep the information on its website and in published material accurate and up to date. Nevertheless, some information may be technically inaccurate or contain typographical errors. Without prejudice to its obligations under the terms and conditions applying to the Rental Agreement/Lease, the Lessor does not guarantee that all information is complete or reliable and disclaims responsibility for errors, omissions, interruptions, changes or misspellings in content, and damage resulting from a system error, computer virus, or third-party error or intrusion.
