Tolls, parking & entrance fees
Most Icelandic roads are free, but a few places charge tolls, parking or entrance fees — collected electronically by licence-plate recognition. As the driver you are responsible for paying them on time. Here is exactly where they apply and how to pay — and if a bill does reach us after your trip, it is matched to your rental and itemised with an explanation.
The driver is always responsible for tolls, parking and entrance fees. Pay on the spot or via the apps below. If a fee goes unpaid and the bill reaches us as the registered keeper, we have to pass it on to you plus our standard ISK 3,000 handling fee — so paying on time always costs you less.

Road fee (kílómetragjald)
Separate from tolls: since 1 January 2026 Iceland levies a distance-based road fee on every vehicle. On a rental it is a fixed ISK 1,550 per started rental day — the official daily fee set by the State plus a small processing amount — shown in your quote up front. It already covers your normal driving — you only pay the items below when you actually use them.
How the road fee worksVaðlaheiði tunnel (north, near Akureyri)
The Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel cuts the Ring Road by ~16 km and avoids the Víkurskarð mountain pass — a real help in winter. It is tolled, with no booths — pay about ISK 2,200 per single trip at veggjald.is within 24 hours before or after you pass through, using your registration number.
If it is not paid in time, the toll is raised and billed to us — we then pass on the toll plus our ISK 3,000 handling fee. Each trip through is charged separately. In summer, the free Víkurskarð pass adds only a few minutes.
Keflavík Airport (KEF) parking
Each area gives a short free grace period, then charges per hour or per day up to a 24-hour cap. Figures are indicative — confirm current rates on the KEF airport website.

Parking in Reykjavík
Central Reykjavík has four paid zones. Pay at a meter (plate number — no dashboard ticket) or via the EasyPark / Parka apps. Free outside charging hours and on public holidays. Pay for the right zone — the parking company, not us, handles wrong-zone fines.

National parks — Þingvellir & Skaftafell
Both charge a parking/entrance fee by licence-plate, valid until midnight that day: ISK 1,000 for a car with up to 5 seats and ISK 1,300 for 6–9 seats. Pay at the on-site machines or on the park website before you leave. Unpaid fees reach us as the keeper — we then pass them on plus our ISK 3,000 handling fee.
Landmannalaugar parking reservations
From 20 June – 15 September, you must reserve a parking space in advance if you arrive between 08:00–15:00. Outside those hours no reservation is needed — the area is open 24/7. Reserve and check prices on the official Landmannalaugar parking site before you set off. (Landmannalaugar is an F-road destination — a true 4×4 only, in summer.)
Other popular spots also charge parking or entrance fees — for example Reynisfjara black beach, Jökulsárlón, Seljalandsfoss, Ytri-Tunga and the Reykjavík city centre. This is not a complete list; always follow the signs and pay when required. The Parka app covers most of Iceland’s popular sites.
Tolls & parking — FAQ
What is the road fee, and who pays it?
Since 1 January 2026 Iceland charges a statutory road fee (kílómetragjald) on rentals. We show it as a fixed ISK 1,550 per started rental day — the official daily fee set by the State plus a small processing amount — as a separate, transparent line in your price up front. Fuel taxes were reduced at the same time. See our Fees page for the full breakdown.
Are tolls and parking fees common in Iceland?
Most of Iceland's roads are free. You'll mainly meet charges in three places: the Vaðlaheiði tunnel in the north, paid parking in Reykjavík and at Keflavík Airport, and entrance/parking fees at a few popular natural sites and national parks. The driver is always responsible for paying these on time.
How do I pay the Vaðlaheiðargöng (tunnel) toll?
There are no toll booths. Pay online at veggjald.is using your registration number, within 24 hours before or after you drive through (about ISK 2,200 per single trip). If it isn't paid in time the toll rises and the bill is sent to us as the registered keeper — we then pass on the toll plus our standard ISK 3,000 handling fee. In summer the free Víkurskarð mountain pass is only a few minutes longer.
How does parking work at Keflavík Airport?
Each area has a short free grace period, then a per-hour or per-day rate, with a 24-hour cap. The drop-off lane is free for 5 minutes; P1/P2 suit pick-ups; P3 is the budget long-stay lot. Pay at the machines or via the airport's site. Figures are indicative — confirm current rates at the KEF airport website.
Where do I pay for parking in Reykjavík?
Central Reykjavík is split into paid zones P1 (most expensive) to P4. Pay at a meter (plate number, card/contactless — no dashboard ticket needed) or via an app such as EasyPark or Parka. Parking is free outside charging hours and on public holidays. Always check the sign — if you pay for the wrong zone you can still be fined, and the parking company, not us, handles those disputes.
Do Iceland's national parks charge entrance or parking fees?
Þingvellir and Skaftafell (part of Vatnajökull National Park) charge a parking/entrance fee by licence-plate: about ISK 1,000 for a car with up to 5 seats and ISK 1,300 for 6–9 seats, valid until midnight that day. Pay at the machines on site or on the park website before you leave. If it goes unpaid and the bill reaches us, we pass it on plus our ISK 3,000 handling fee.
Do I need to reserve parking at Landmannalaugar?
From 20 June to 15 September you must reserve a parking space in advance if you arrive between 08:00 and 15:00. Outside those hours no reservation is needed (the area is open 24/7). Book and check prices on the official Landmannalaugar parking site before you set off.
Third-party figures (tunnel, airport, city and national-park fees) are indicative and set by those operators — they change, so check the official source before you travel. The only charge we add is the handling fee shown above, and only if an unpaid bill reaches us.
